When a Drain Needs More Than a Plunger

A drain rarely stops all at once. It slows over weeks as grease, hair, soap film or scale narrows the pipe, and the warning signs are easy to dismiss until water stands in the basin. South Fullerton Plumbing clears drains in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms and the main lines that carry all of them to the sewer.

Symptoms Worth Attention

  • A sink, tub or shower that drains slowly even after the stopper has been cleaned
  • Gurgling from a drain when another fixture is used
  • The same drain clogging again within days or weeks of being cleared
  • Several fixtures backing up at once, often the lowest drains in the house first
  • Water rising in the tub or shower when the toilet is flushed or the washer drains
  • A sewage odor near floor drains or cleanouts

The first three usually point to a problem in one fixture’s branch line. The last three suggest a restriction in the main line, which is a different job: it is reached through a cleanout, and in older neighborhoods it is often tree roots or an aging clay or cast iron pipe. That work is covered on the Sewer Lines page.

Commercial kitchens add their own load. Grease that passes the grease interceptor cools and hardens in the line, and a restaurant drain can close up faster than any household line. Those lines are usually cleaned by hydro jetting rather than snaking.

Snaking, Hydro Jetting and Camera Inspection

The right method depends on where the blockage is, what it is made of and the condition of the pipe. Daniel Wright makes a habit of finding the cause before recommending the work, so a recurring clog is inspected rather than simply cleared again.

What Not to Pour or Flush

  • Cooking grease, oil and fat, even when hot water runs with them
  • Coffee grounds, eggshells, rice and pasta
  • Wipes of any kind, including those labeled flushable
  • Paper towels, cotton swabs and hygiene products
  • Paint, grout, plaster and drywall mud
  • Chemical drain openers, which are hard on pipes and on the plumber who opens the line later

Chemical Cleaners and Recurring Clogs

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?

Caustic and acid drain cleaners generate heat and can soften older PVC joints, pit metal traps and corrode galvanized and cast iron pipe. They also rarely clear a solid blockage, and a plumber who later opens the line must work around the chemical. A plunger or a hand auger is the safer first attempt; when those fail, mechanical clearing is the better course.

Why does the same drain keep clogging?

A drain that clogs again within weeks usually has a cause beyond the last blockage: grease coating the line, a partial collapse, a belly where water sits, or roots entering a joint. Snaking opens a path through such a problem without removing it. A camera inspection shows which of these is present, and the repair or the cleaning method is chosen from what the camera finds.

How can a main line clog be told apart from a single-fixture clog?

A single-fixture clog affects one sink, tub or toilet. A main line clog affects several fixtures, usually the lowest ones first: water rising in a shower when the toilet is flushed, or a gurgle in the tub when the washer drains. A main line problem calls for a cleanout and, often, a look with the camera.

Does hydro jetting damage pipes?

In sound pipe, jetting is a standard cleaning method and the pressure is matched to the pipe. In a cracked, offset or badly corroded line it can make an existing weakness worse, which is why older lines are inspected before they are jetted.

Just had him come out and evaluate my shower drain that's clogged, actually that was clogged, now that he took care of it. Prompt and accurate service is all I got to say, and very reasonably priced. Give'em a call for your plumbing needs
