When the Problem Is the Line to the Street
Every drain in a house ends in one pipe: the sewer lateral that runs under the yard to the city main. When that line is blocked, cracked or full of roots, no amount of work on a single fixture fixes the problem. South Fullerton Plumbing inspects, clears, repairs and replaces sewer lines for homes and small commercial buildings.
Warning Signs
- Backups in the lowest drains first: a shower, a tub or a floor drain
- A sewage smell inside the house or near the cleanout
- A lush, wet patch of lawn over the line, even in dry weather
- Several fixtures draining slowly at the same time
- Gurgling in a toilet when a sink or the washer drains
- Clogs that return soon after the main line was cleared
Tree Roots and Older Laterals
Established neighborhoods in Fullerton were built with vitrified clay or cast iron sewer laterals, and many of those lines are still in service after fifty years or more. Clay pipe was laid in short sections, and every joint is a place where a root can find moisture. Cast iron corrodes from the inside and scales until the flow narrows. Mature parkway trees make roots the most common cause of a recurring main line clog in these streets.
Camera Inspection and Repair Methods
Daniel Wright traces the cause with a sewer camera before recommending a repair. The camera runs from a cleanout to the main and records what it passes, so the recommendation rests on what the line actually looks like.
What a Camera Inspection Shows
- Root intrusion and the joints it enters through
- Cracks, breaks and collapsed sections
- Offset joints where sections have shifted
- Bellies, the low spots where water and waste settle
- Scale, grease and corrosion narrowing the pipe
- The distance to each problem, so a repair can be located from the surface
Repair Methods Compared
More columns to the right: swipe.
| Method | How it works | When it fits | Disruption level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | One damaged section is dug up and replaced with new pipe | A single break, offset joint or root entry point in otherwise sound pipe | Low to moderate: one small excavation |
| Trenchless lining | A resin-soaked liner is pulled into the old pipe and cured into a new pipe inside it | Cracked or root-damaged pipe that still holds its shape | Low: access at a cleanout or a small pit |
| Pipe bursting | A bursting head pulls new pipe through the old line, breaking it outward | Collapsed or badly deteriorated pipe on a straight run | Moderate: an entry pit and an exit pit |
| Open trench | The full length of the line is excavated and replaced | Severe sags, wrong slope, or lines that other methods cannot reach | High: the yard, driveway or walk along the line |
A cleanout near the house gives access for cleaning and inspection without pulling a toilet. Where a property has none, adding one is often part of the repair.
Responsibility and Permits
Who is responsible for the sewer lateral?
In Fullerton, as in most Orange County cities, the property owner is generally responsible for the lateral that runs from the house to the public sewer main, including the section under the parkway. The City of Fullerton Public Works Department can confirm where the city’s responsibility begins for a particular property.
Does sewer line work need a permit?
Lateral repair and replacement normally need a permit from the City of Fullerton Building and Safety Division, and any work in the street or the public right of way needs an encroachment permit from Public Works. Placentia, Brea and La Habra have their own departments with similar rules.
Will the roots simply grow back?
Clearing roots with a cutter or a jetter restores flow, but roots return through the same open joints. A lining or a replaced section closes those joints. Where the pipe is otherwise sound, scheduled cleaning is an alternative, and the camera shows which approach fits.
What should be done during a sewage backup?
Stop using water in the house, keep people and pets away from the affected area, and call. The Emergency Plumbing page covers the first steps.
He was very professional and cleaned after himself. Put in booties on his work boots before walking into the house. Was fast and reliable. Installed a clean out and put in 10 feet of new sewer line. Will be using him for future jobs.Read More Reviews on Yelp
